The Inspiration
I have always loved pumpkins, and I think it's partly because I adore fall and my blood type is pumpkin spice! My inspiration for this design actually came from an accidental pumpkin patch in our horse pasture. A neighbor of ours had a pumpkin patch and sold pumpkins every fall. One year, as he was driving by, a couple of pumpkins fell off his trailer and rolled into our ditch. He told us to keep them, so we displayed them for a while, but eventually, we tossed them out for the horses to kick around.
The following spring, we discovered we had our own pumpkin patch. The randomly scattered pumpkin seeds found their way into the well-fertilized ground and grew like crazy. I wasn't interested in selling the pumpkins, but I didn't want them to go to waste either. Thankfully, we were able to donate them to a charity, and they sold them all!
The Blue Pumpkin
Right after I stitched the orange pumpkin trio, I felt inspired to create the same design using trendy decor colors. I had often seen pumpkins in off-white and a blueish turquoise shade in home decor. While I knew that white pumpkins were real, I always thought blue pumpkins were just a way to complement the orange color. However, about a year after stitching the blue pumpkin design, I saw one in real life. I was so shocked that I went full teenage girl for a moment, exclaiming, "What the??? No way, shut up, shut up!" (though nobody else was talking).
My husband and I were visiting his mom when we encountered this blue pumpkin, which belonged to her. If I had seen that pumpkin anywhere else, I probably wouldn't have believed it was real! She has always maintained a flourishing garden, but had just started growing blue pumpkins that year. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name or variety of the pumpkin, but it was definitely blue.
It's not every day you get a black cat to hang out next to a pumpkin. If only I had a little witch's hat for his head.
Blue pumpkins do exist!
While this photo shows a bit more green, it was nearly blue.
